This book has existed in my mind and soul long before it ever touched paper! Over years of working as a nephrologist, I have learned so much about how to really listen to my patients — both what they’re saying out loud, and the unvoiced thoughts and feelings behind their words. Connecting with patients so closely has changed the way I practice medicine. In many cases, this has led to better outcomes and higher patient satisfaction.
As I shared my (anonymized) experiences through conversations and social media, many of my friends encouraged me to write a book so that more people could hear this message. After months of praying, envisioning this book, then wrestling with words to create the book, I’m proud to say that it’s finally here!
So, what exactly is my message?
I want to encourage healthcare professionals and students to move beyond charts and diagnoses so that we can rediscover the humanity at the core of medicine. When we challenge labels and lead with compassion, we can improve patient relationships and enhance our own well-being. I also want to remind readers that as providers, we stand in a sacred space — we’re meeting people in some of the most vulnerable and life-defining moments they will ever experience.
We can treat the disease, or we can heal the patient. They may not remember everything we say, but they will certainly remember how they feel with us. Let’s transform each encounter into a personal connection where the patient is both healed and heard — and in the process, we may find healing within ourselves as well.
