Preventing Physician Burnout, 30 Minutes at a Time

A clinician pausing with eyes closed for a quiet moment at her desk during the workday

To my colleagues in healthcare: How do we remain connected and continue to show empathy when so much is demanded of us? Amidst the constant noise, at some point, we find ourselves asking, How much of myself can I afford to give?

Perhaps this is where we pause and honestly ask ourselves: Am I okay? Do I allow myself to seek support? Where do I find the time to breathe when the charting is still incomplete?

Sometimes, the answer is simple: We ask for help. And sometimes, that help comes at the cost of leaving the comfort of our routines.

I’ll share something personal. I do not like change. I prefer typing and resisted dictation because it was my comfort zone. I convinced myself that my thoughts were better organized that way.

Until I realized it was no longer sustainable.

I had to accept change, adjust my practice, and embrace the discomfort of simplifying my documentation. In doing so, I gained something invaluable. That extra 30 minutes I save can be spent sitting quietly, taking a lunch break, going for a walk, or simply being still.

It may seem small, but it is a measurable victory.

So, if your work environment is not hostile, perhaps we can pause and weigh the pros and cons. Maybe there are things we can tweak without losing ourselves in the process. And through it all, let us remember that our profession remains noble and sacred; and you are an important part of it.

Take care of yourselves, too. Compassion for others should never come at the expense of compassion for ourselves.

If today felt heavy, start with one small change — and be as gentle with yourself as you are with your patients.
